I already included a flat gingerbread cookie in the Crochet Christmas Decorations set, so this one is a bigger standalone design: a plump 3D gingerbread man with a round head, a chubby body, short arms and legs, white “icing” outlines, a bow tie, and three button details. The head and body are worked in one piece, so there is very little sewing. Set him under the tree, hang him as an ornament, or give him as a festive gift.
Pattern Information
Skill level: Beginner to intermediate, with shaping, embroidery, and sewing.
Terms: US crochet terminology.
Construction: The head and body are worked in one piece in continuous rounds. The arms, legs, and bow tie are worked separately and sewn on. The icing details and face are embroidered.
Estimated size: About 15 cm (6 in) tall, using DK-weight cotton. Actual dimensions depend on yarn, tension, and stuffing.
Pattern note: This is an original design based on the title concept. Stitch counts have been checked, but the pattern has not been physically crocheted or independently tested. Adjust the shaping and feature placement to suit your yarn.
Materials
- DK-weight cotton yarn in gingerbread brown, approximately 40 g, for the head, body, arms, and legs.
- White yarn or thread, approximately 5 g, for the icing.
- Red yarn, approximately 3 g, for the bow tie, and a little green and yellow for the buttons.
- Black thread for the eyes and mouth, and pink thread for the cheeks.
- A 2.5 mm hook as a starting point (use a hook small enough to keep the fabric dense).
- Fiberfill, stitch marker, tapestry needle, scissors, and removable pins.
All features are embroidered, so this gingerbread man is suitable for gifting to children. Sew every part on firmly.
Stitches and Abbreviations
| Abbreviation | Meaning |
|---|---|
| MR | magic ring |
| ch | chain |
| sc | single crochet |
| sl st | slip stitch |
| inc | 2 sc in one stitch |
| dec | invisible single crochet decrease over the next 2 stitches |
| st(s) | stitch(es) |
Work in a spiral without joining or turning unless directed otherwise. Numbers in brackets give the completed stitch count. Repeat parentheses the stated number of times. Move the marker at the start of every round.
Before You Begin
Crochet tightly so the stuffing does not show through the stitches. Stuff firmly but evenly, adding small pieces rather than large clumps. The head and body should look like a plump cookie, so do not overstuff the neck. Embroider the face and icing after stuffing so you can place them where they look best.

Bow Tie (red)
Ch 8. Sc in the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. [7] Fasten off with a long tail. Wrap the tail tightly around the center twice to gather it into a bow, then tie off. Sew to the neck, centered under the face.
Icing and Buttons
- Wrist and ankle icing: With white yarn or thread, embroider a wavy line of small stitches around the end of each arm and leg, about 1 round from the tip.
- Head outline (optional): Work small white backstitches in a loose scallop along the edge of the head, from ear level to ear level.
- Buttons: Embroider three small satin-stitch circles or French knots down the center front of the body, on Rounds 16, 18 and 20, in red, green, and yellow.
Face
- Eyes: With black thread, embroider two small satin-stitch dots on Rounds 7–8, about 8 stitches apart.
- Smile: Embroider a wide, gentle curve about 2 rounds below the eyes, about 5 stitches wide.
- Cheeks: With pink thread, add a small patch of 2 or 3 horizontal stitches below and outside each eye.
Assembly and Finishing
- Arms and legs: Sew them on at the same height on each side.
- Bow tie: Sew it on at the neck.
- Hanging loop (optional): Ch 15, sl st in the first ch to form a ring, and sew it to the top center of the head.
- Hide every tail and give each limb and the bow tie a gentle tug to check it holds.
Practical Tips and Troubleshooting
The head looks too round. Reduce the filling a little and press the head gently flat between your palms to look like a cookie.
The gingerbread man leans. Flatten the bottom, and sew both legs on at the same height.
The icing looks messy. Mark the line with pins first and keep every stitch the same length.
The neck is too thin. Add one plain round at 18 stitches before Round 13.
The eyes look uneven. Mark both positions with pins first, and check the face from the front and from above before embroidering.
FAQ
Can I make it bigger? Yes. Use chunky yarn and a 4 mm hook for a gingerbread man about one and a half times larger, and add 2 extra plain rounds to the body.
Can I use safety eyes? Yes, for older children and adults. Use 6 mm safety eyes between Rounds 7 and 8, with 8 stitches between them.
Can I make a gingerbread woman? Yes. Add a small bow to the head, and make a short skirt by working a ruffle of 2 rounds of inc around the body.
Can I turn it into an ornament? Yes. Add the hanging loop and leave it on the tree.
