I already wrote a gnome for you (the cozy gnome in “Free Christmas Amigurumi Pattern You Need to Crochet ASAP”), so this one is a different design: a taller standing gnome with a striped, tilted hat, a mitten-style pair of hands, a holly sprig, and a little hanging bell. The body is a cone that stands on its own, so you don’t need pellets or a base. Set him on a mantel, a shelf, or a gift table.

Pattern Information

Skill level: Beginner to intermediate, with color changes and sewing.
Terms: US crochet terminology.
Construction: The body is worked in one piece from the bottom up as a cone. The hat, beard, nose, hands, and holly are worked separately and sewn on. The beard is worked flat in rows.
Estimated size: About 20 cm (8 in) tall including the hat, using DK-weight cotton. Actual dimensions depend on yarn, tension, and stuffing.
Pattern note: This is an original design based on the title concept. Stitch counts have been checked, but the pattern has not been physically crocheted or independently tested. Adjust the shaping and placement to suit your yarn.

Materials

  • DK-weight cotton yarn in dark green or gray, approximately 25 g, for the body.
  • Red yarn, approximately 15 g, and white yarn, approximately 20 g, for the hat, beard, and pom-pom.
  • Peach yarn, approximately 4 g, for the nose and hands.
  • Green yarn and a little red yarn for the holly, and a little gold yarn for the bell.
  • A 2.5 mm hook as a starting point (use a hook small enough to keep the fabric dense).
  • Fiberfill, stitch marker, tapestry needle, scissors, and removable pins.
  • Optional: a small handful of poly pellets in the base (not for children under three).

The gnome has no eyes, so there are no safety eyes to worry about. Keep the holly and bell away from babies and children under three.

Work in a spiral without joining or turning unless directed otherwise. Numbers in brackets give the completed stitch count. Repeat parentheses the stated number of times. Move the marker at the start of every round. When you change color, switch on the final yarn-over of the last stitch of the previous round.

Before You Begin

Crochet tightly so the stuffing does not show through the stitches. Stuff the body firmly and evenly, and leave the hat unstuffed. The beard covers most of the front of the body, so a neat finish matters more on the hat than on the body.

Body (green or gray)

Round 1: 6 sc in MR. [6]
Round 2: Inc in each stitch. [12]
Round 3: (Sc, inc) × 6. [18]

Round 15: (3 sc, dec) × 6. [24]

Stuff firmly now, adding pellets to the base first if you are using them.

Round 17: (Sc, dec) × 6. [12]
Round 18: Dec × 6. [6]

Fasten off, close the hole, and hide the end. The flat base with the ridge from Round 6 helps the gnome stand upright.

Round 4: Inc in each stitch. [12]

Sl st in the next stitch and fasten off with a long tail. Leave the hat unstuffed.

Pom-pom (white): 6 sc in MR. [6] Inc in each stitch. [12] Sc around for 2 rounds. [12] Dec × 6. [6] Stuff lightly, close, and sew to the tip of the hat. Fold the tip to one side and add a small tack at the fold.

Worked flat in rows. Ch 16.

Row 1: Sc in the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. [15]
Row 2: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in the next 11 sts, sc2tog. Turn. [13]

Row 7: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in the next st, sc2tog. [3]

Fasten off with a long tail. For a fluffier beard, pull 4 cm (1.5 in) strands of white yarn through the edge stitches, knot, trim, and fluff with a tapestry needle.

Nose (peach)

Round 1: 6 sc in MR. [6]
Round 2: Inc in each stitch. [12]
Round 3: Sc around. [12]
Round 4: Dec × 6. [6]

Hands (make 2, peach)

Round 1: 5 sc in MR. [5]
Round 2: Sc around. [5]

Fasten off with a long tail. Stuff with a tiny wisp and sew to the sides of the body, just under the beard, at about Round 12.

Holly Sprig

Leaves (make 2, green): Ch 7. Sl st in the 2nd ch from hook, sc in the next ch, hdc in the next ch, dc in the next ch, hdc in the next ch, sc in the last ch. Fasten off with a long tail.

Berries (make 3, red): 4 sc in MR. [4] Pull tight, fasten off with a long tail, and gather into a tiny ball.

Sew the leaves side by side to the hat band, with the berries in a cluster where they meet.

Bell (gold)

Round 1: 6 sc in MR. [6]
Round 2: Inc in each stitch. [12]
Round 3: Sc around. [12]
Round 4: Dec × 6. [6]

Stuff lightly, fasten off with a long tail, and close the hole. Sew to the pom-pom or hang it from the hat tip on a short chain of 4.

Assembly

  1. Beard: Pin the straight top edge of the beard across the upper third of the body, with the point hanging down. Sew around the edge with small white stitches.
  2. Nose: Sew the nose to the center of the beard’s top edge, so it peeks out between the beard and the hat.
  3. Hat: Pull the hat down over the top of the body so the brim covers the top edge of the beard. Sew all around with small red stitches.
  4. Hands: Sew the hands to the sides, just under the beard.
  5. Holly and bell: Sew them on as described above.
  6. Hide every tail and give each part a gentle tug to check it holds.

Practical Tips and Troubleshooting

The gnome leans. Flatten the base and make sure the stuffing is firm and even. Add a few pellets if it is not for a young child.

The hat slides off. Sew it on with more stitches all around, or add a tack at the back.

The hat looks too small. The hat has 30 stitches to match the body’s widest round. If it looks small, add one round of (4 sc, inc) × 6 for 36 stitches before the last two rounds.

The beard looks flat. Add more fringe, or sew a second beard piece behind the first.

The stripes look uneven. Change color on the last stitch of a round and move the marker before the next round.

FAQ

Can I make it bigger? Yes. Use chunky yarn and a 4 mm hook for a gnome about twice the size, and add 2 extra plain rounds to the body.

Can I add a face? Gnomes traditionally have no eyes, but you can add two tiny black dots above the nose.

Can I turn it into an ornament? Yes. Skip the ridge round, sew a ch-15 loop to the tip of the hat, and hang it on the tree.

Can I use other colors? Absolutely. Try plaid-style stripes in green and cream, or gold and white for a sparkly version.
