I already included a tiny tree in the Crochet Christmas Decorations set, so this one is a bigger standalone design: a layered tiered tree with three stacked green cones, a brown trunk, a yellow star topper, and little red bobble ornaments. The tiers give it a fuller, more decorated look than the plain cone. Hang it on the tree, set it on a mantel, or give it as a gift.
Pattern Information
Skill level: Beginner to intermediate, with shaping, embroidery, and sewing.
Terms: US crochet terminology.
Construction: The three tiers are worked separately in continuous rounds, stuffed, and stacked on a trunk. The star is worked flat. The ornaments are embroidered or sewn on.
Estimated size: About 16 cm (6.25 in) tall including the star, using DK-weight cotton. Actual dimensions depend on yarn, tension, and stuffing.
Pattern note: This is an original design based on the title concept. Stitch counts have been checked, but the pattern has not been physically crocheted or independently tested. Adjust the shaping and placement to suit your yarn.
Materials
- DK-weight cotton yarn in forest green, approximately 30 g, for the tiers.
- Brown yarn, approximately 4 g, for the trunk.
- Yellow or gold yarn, approximately 3 g, for the star.
- Red yarn and gold thread, approximately 3 g in total, for the ornaments and garland.
- A 2.5 mm hook as a starting point (use a hook small enough to keep the fabric dense).
- Fiberfill, stitch marker, tapestry needle, scissors, and removable pins.
- Optional: a few small seed beads (not for children under three).
All features are embroidered or crocheted. Keep ornaments with small parts away from babies and children under three.

| sl st | slip stitch |
| inc | 2 sc in one stitch |

Before You Begin
Crochet tightly so the stuffing does not show through the stitches. Stuff each tier firmly but evenly, adding small pieces rather than large clumps. Each tier is a cone with a flat base, and the back-loop round makes a ledge that gives the tree its layered look.
Top Tier (green)
Round 1: 6 sc in MR. [6]
Round 2: Inc in each stitch. [12]
Round 3: Sc around. [12]
Round 4: (Sc, inc) × 6. [18]
Round 5: Sc around. [18]
Round 6: (2 sc, inc) × 6. [24]
Round 7: Sc in the back loops only. [24]
Round 8: (2 sc, dec) × 6. [18]
Stuff firmly. Fasten off with a long tail, flatten the opening, and sew it closed.
Middle Tier (green)
Round 1: 6 sc in MR. [6]
Round 2: Inc in each stitch. [12]
Round 3: (Sc, inc) × 6. [18]
Round 4: Sc around. [18]
Round 5: (2 sc, inc) × 6. [24]
Round 6: Sc around. [24]
Round 7: (3 sc, inc) × 6. [30]
Round 8: Sc in the back loops only. [30]
Round 9: (3 sc, dec) × 6. [24]
Stuff firmly. Fasten off with a long tail, flatten the opening, and sew it closed.
Bottom Tier (green)
Round 1: 6 sc in MR. [6]
Round 2: Inc in each stitch. [12]
Round 3: (Sc, inc) × 6. [18]
Round 4: (2 sc, inc) × 6. [24]
Round 5: Sc around. [24]
Round 6: (3 sc, inc) × 6. [30]
Round 7: Sc around. [30]
Round 8: (4 sc, inc) × 6. [36]
Round 9: Sc in the back loops only. [36]
Round 10: (4 sc, dec) × 6. [30]
Stuff firmly. Fasten off with a long tail, flatten the opening, and sew it closed.
Trunk (brown)
Round 1: 6 sc in MR. [6]
Round 2: Inc in each stitch. [12]
Rounds 3–5: Sc around. [12 per round; 3 rounds]
Fasten off with a long tail. Stuff lightly and sew the open end to the center of the flat underside of the bottom tier.
Star (yellow or gold)
Make 2 pieces, then join.
Ch 2.
Round 1: 5 sc in the 2nd ch from hook. [5]
Round 2: (Sc, ch 2, sl st in the 2nd ch from hook, sc in the same stitch) in each of the 5 stitches. [5 points]
Fasten off the first piece. Do not fasten off the second. Hold both stars together and sew or sc them together around the edge, adding a tiny wisp of stuffing before closing. Fasten off.
Note: this makes a small five-point star. If the points look short, work (sc, ch 3, sl st in the 2nd ch from hook, sl st in the next ch, sc) in each stitch.
Ornaments and Garland
- Red bobbles: With red yarn, embroider 3 or 4 French knots on each tier, in a loose scatter.
- Gold garland: With gold thread, make long straight stitches in a loose zigzag around each tier.
- Optional beads: Sew a few seed beads among the knots.
Assembly and Finishing
- Stack the tiers: Place the top tier on the middle tier, and the middle tier on the bottom tier, aligning the centers. Sew each pair together all around the ledge with small stitches.
- Attach the trunk: Sew it to the underside of the bottom tier.
- Star: Sew it to the top of the top tier.
- Hanging loop (optional): Ch 15, sl st in the first ch, and sew the loop to the top of the top tier, under the star.
- Hide every tail and give each part a gentle tug to check it holds.
Practical Tips and Troubleshooting
The tiers lean. Flatten each base and sew the tiers on with the centers aligned. Add a tack stitch through the middle with a long needle.
The tree looks too thin. Add one extra increase round to each tier, and stuff firmly.
The star flops. Add a little more stuffing and sew it on with several passes at the base.
The ledges do not show. Pull the back-loop round slightly outward, and press with a damp cloth.
The ornaments look messy. Mark the placement with pins first.
FAQ
Can I make it bigger? Yes. Use chunky yarn and a 4 mm hook for a tree about twice the size, and add 2 extra plain rounds to each tier.
Can I make it a free-standing tree? Yes. Flatten the bottom of the bottom tier and add a small cardboard disc inside before closing.
Can I use other colors? Absolutely. Try white, silver, or pastel green with gold stars.
Can I make a garland? Yes. Make a small version of the top tier only and string several together.
