I already included a tiny snowman in the Crochet Christmas Decorations set, so this one is a bigger standalone design. It is a plump, two-ball snowman with a red-and-white beanie, a striped scarf, a carrot nose, and little crocheted twig arms. Set him on a mantel or shelf, or give him as a handmade holiday gift.
Pattern Information
Skill level: Beginner to intermediate, with color changes, embroidery, and sewing.
Terms: US crochet terminology.
Construction: The head and body are worked separately in continuous rounds, then sewn together. The hat, nose, arms, and pom-pom are worked separately. The scarf is worked flat in rows. All features are embroidered.
Estimated size: About 18 cm (7 in) tall including the hat, using DK-weight cotton. Actual dimensions depend on yarn, tension, and stuffing.
Pattern note: This is an original design based on the title concept. Stitch counts have been checked, but the pattern has not been physically crocheted or independently tested. Adjust the shaping and feature placement to suit your yarn.
Materials
- DK-weight cotton yarn in white, approximately 40 g, for the head, body, hat brim, and pom-pom.
- Red yarn, approximately 12 g, for the hat and scarf.
- Orange yarn, approximately 2 g, for the nose.
- Brown yarn, approximately 3 g, for the arms.
- Black thread for the eyes, mouth, and buttons, and pink thread for the cheeks.
- A 2.75 mm hook as a starting point (use a hook small enough to keep the fabric dense).
- Fiberfill, stitch marker, tapestry needle, scissors, and removable pins.
All features are embroidered, so this snowman is suitable for gifting to young children. Sew every part on firmly.
Stitches and Abbreviations
| Abbreviation | Meaning |
|---|---|
| MR | magic ring |
| ch | chain |
| sc | single crochet |
| sl st | slip stitch |
| inc | 2 sc in one stitch |
| dec | invisible single crochet decrease over the next 2 stitches |
| st(s) | stitch(es) |
Work in a spiral without joining or turning unless directed otherwise. Numbers in brackets give the completed stitch count. Repeat parentheses the stated number of times. Move the marker at the start of every round. When you change color, switch on the final yarn-over of the last stitch of the previous round.
Before You Begin
Crochet tightly so the stuffing does not show through the stitches. Stuff firmly but evenly, adding small pieces rather than large clumps. White yarn shows every bit of dirt, so wash your hands before you start and keep the project in a clean bag.

Leave a long tail, then ch 9. Sl st in the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. [8 sl st]

Assembly and Face
- Head to body: Pin the head on top of the body, with the head’s closure facing down. Sew all around with small, strong stitches. Check that the head sits straight from the front and the side.
- Eyes: With black thread, embroider two small satin-stitch ovals on Rounds 8–9, about 8 stitches apart.
- Nose: Sew the carrot nose to the center front on Round 10, between the eyes, angled slightly downward.
- Mouth: With black thread, embroider five tiny stitches in a smile-shaped arc on Rounds 11–12, below the nose.
- Cheeks: With pink thread, add a small patch of 2 or 3 horizontal stitches on each side, just below and outside the eyes.
- Buttons: With black thread, embroider three small satin-stitch circles or French knots down the center front of the body, on Rounds 9, 11, and 13.
- Arms: Sew the twig arms to the sides of the body at about Rounds 10–11, angled slightly upward.
- Scarf: Wrap the scarf around the neck where the head meets the body, and sew it lightly at the back.
- Hat: Place the hat on the head so the white brim sits just above the eyes. Sew all around with small white stitches.
Hide every tail and give the hat, arms, and nose a gentle tug to check they hold.
Practical Tips and Troubleshooting
The head tilts. Pin the head first, check from the front and side, and sew with extra stitches on the lower side.
The snowman leans. Flatten the bottom of the body and add a little more stuffing in the base.
The stripes on the scarf look uneven. Change color at the start of a row and carry the yarn loosely up the side.
The nose droops. Stuff it slightly more firmly and sew it on with several passes around the base.
The hat slides off. Sew around the brim with more stitches, or add a small tack at the back.
FAQ
Can I make it bigger? Yes. Use chunky yarn and a 4 mm hook for a snowman about one and a half times larger, and add 2 extra plain rounds to the body and head.
Can I use safety eyes? Yes, for older children and adults. Use 8 mm safety eyes between Rounds 8 and 9.
Can I make a snowwoman? Yes. Replace the hat with a flower or bow, and add a few eyelash stitches.
Can I turn it into an ornament? Yes. Make just the head, sew a ch-15 loop to the top of the hat, and hang it on the tree.
